"The SVA BFA Photo & Video Department is part of a vast professional network in the heart of New York City, the epicenter of art, culture, commerce, advertising, fashion, and activism. Our alumni go on to work successfully in all creative fields and tend to hire fellow graduates because of a shared language and track record."

— Joseph Maida, Chair BFA Photo & Video

Our calendar is composed of artist talks, panel discussions, exhibitions, video screenings, pop-up events, and our celebrated annual Mentor Show, all of which speak to our collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to photo, video, and the many media with which they intersect. Our events showcase the best work from the BFA Photo & Video Department while engaging with leading members of the larger creative community.

SVA’s Photo & Video BFA program emphasizes a comprehensive visual language through a ground-breaking curriculum that gives students the technical and conceptual mastery to thrive in today’s professional landscape. The curriculum establishes a strong visual foundation through the study of analog and digital technical practices, theoretical discourse, and current cultural conversations. Emphasis is placed on the student’s individual development as it relates to their peer and professional communities.

One of the features of our BFA Photo & Video curriculum is to immerse our students in the moving image in its technical form as well as its conceptual possibilities. Having mastered the fundamental video processes after the first and second years of the program, each student can then specialize in an area of interest and relevance to their future video activity.

Below are links to important information for prospective, current, and pre-college students.

Our 80+ faculty members are composed of renowned artists, critics, and scholars in their fields who are committed to leading our students into their thriving professional photo and video careers. Our students’ success starts with a personal connection to their teachers. These relationships are fostered from the very first semester of study.
